Hi
It’s that time again, when You the citizens of Kilkenny decide on who will best represent you and your families interests for the next five years at a local level. There is no doubt that this year’s local elections are set against a backdrop of unprecedented turmoil, both globally and here in Ireland.
At a local level, we as a community must strive to integrate social, economic and environmental development, to support the marginalised, those at risk of poverty but also position the City and County as an innovative centre of entrepreneurial spirit. We must support local crafts, business, tourism and retailers, continue to strengthen the links between our community and voluntary organisations in this challenging time. This has been my priority not just over the last five years but over many years prior to that as a community and environmental activist here in Kilkenny.
Social Inclusion has and will continue to be top of my agenda. There are many in our community who have gained nothing from the frenzy of the boom years. Local Authorities play a vital role in community development and this role must be galvanised by focused action in key areas of disadvantage. Drug addiction is destroying lives and tearing families apart. We must meet this challenge head on and make difficult decisions on provision of treatment facilities.
Over the past five years I have worked hard to bring a new agenda in the development of Kilkenny City and County. My position on the Inner Relief Road (Central Access Scheme) was a difficult one to hold; I was the only member of both Local Authorities to oppose the scheme. However, I used my objection to bring about a positive change in transportation policy within the council, one that has thankfully brought unprecedented levels of funding and a commitment to a further 50km in cycle lanes in the city. My proposal for a County Transport Forum to oversee an integrated rural and urban transport service for the city and my work on walking busses, in schools will offer a viable healthy alternative to taking the car into the city.
Throughout this newsletter I have outlined my work to date and my vision for the future of this great City and County. I have worked tirelessly on behalf of you and your community and worked well with both my Council colleagues and with Council officials to develop many civic projects. I have also been very fortunate to have networked with many community groups, business interests and organisations over the past number of years. It is important that this interdependent web continues so we can develop Kilkenny City and County to its full potential and that equal opportunities towards personal fulfilment are there for us all and not just a privileged minority.
We have a beautiful county and city with so much potential yet unrealised. I am passionate about Kilkenny, its built and natural heritage and the many communities that make it so special. While many of us might feel powerless in the face of international and national chaos, there is so much to be positive about at a local level. I would urge you to get involved, to volunteer and to be the change you want to see. Let’s focus on what we can do locally to strengthen our communities. I hope you will put your trust in me for another five years. It would be a privilege to serve you again
Thanks for your time
Malcolm
