The sun was shining on the 74th annual Tullow Agricultural Show today, where I had the pleasure of accompanying An Taoiseach Simon Harris as we did the rounds, visited the trade stands and officially opened the show!
The event was a huge success, and that wasn't just down to the great weather! Shows like this are a huge boost to local rural economies, but they take a huge amount of work and it really couldn’t happen without the efforts of the organising committee and the army of volunteers and stewards who keep things running smoothly on the day.
I want to thank all involved with Tullow Show for a great day out, and an opportunity to meet up and chat with old friends and new - community groups, organisations and small business owners from across Carlow and Kilkenny - and of course the farmers! Like anyone else, I went along yesterday to soak up the atmosphere and enjoy the day, but I also wanted to let farmers know how I’m backing rural Carlow and Kilkenny: supporting family farms and retention of the Nitrates Derogation, and supporting nature restoration as part of a sustainable farm operation. I've seen and met farmers up and down the county working to restore nature and showing us how it can be done. I'm also backing young farmers, supporting the Commission on the Renewal of Agriculture and working to secure a viable future for young farmers.
I’m looking forward to more great agricultural shows and fruitful conversations in the weeks ahead, as I continue to voice my support for rural Ireland. You can read more on that here.
