Callan, Paulstown and Tullow get Town Centre First funding

Over €140,000 has been allocated to support the development of three ‘Town Centre First’ projects across Carlow and Kilkenny to breathe new life into our town centres.

  • €41,146 for the enhancement of a town centre park in Tullow

  • €49,950 for new community spaces in Callan

  • €49,950 for a new village centre public space in Paulstown

A ‘Town Centre First’ approach has been absolutely central to this government’s approach to rural development and rural regeneration. It’s a concept I myself brought to our Programme for Government, so it’s especially gratifying for me to see these projects move from concept to development, and I'm really looking forward to seeing them come to fruition.

Under this strategy we have seen unprecedented investment in efforts to make our towns better places to live, work, and raise a family, and all three of the projects funded in Carlow-Kilkenny today will help us achieve those objectives for Callan, Paulstown and Tullow.

The enhancement of a town centre park in Tullow with accessible natural paths and family-friendly areas will create a beautiful, inclusive space for people to spend time, relax, play and enjoy the vibrancy of Tullow in a new way, as will the creation of an attractive new village centre space in Paulstown.

Likewise, the project in Callan has huge scope to bring people together in the creation of new community spaces. It’s a wonderful concept and as Minister for Nature and Heritage I can appreciate the value to the wider community of establishing an outdoor classroom and community space in Abbey Field and examining the re-development of a derelict cottage in Moate Field - heritage-leg regeneration is something very close to my heart and I wish the community well in their endeavours to see this project through.
