Green Party candidate in the upcoming General Election Cllr Malcolm Noonan is urging his fellow candidates to refrain from postering in town and village centres in the 2016 General Election campaign.
Cllr Noonan said that while his preference was for a complete overhaul on guidelines for election posters that would include restrictions to designated sites in each constituency, that candidates could collectively pledge not to deface town and village centres with posters.
‘My team will not be postering town or village centres, consistent with previous elections. Similarly we will not be defacing shopfronts with large stickers on windows. It is our view that the nature of campaigning is changing and that posters are becoming less relevant and an annoyance to most voters’ said Cllr Noonan.
He said that the Greens had tried on a number of occasions to bring in restrictions but have had huge resistence from the four main political parties. ‘Environmentally they are disasterous; producing large amounts of plastic. In some cases candidates have disposed of thousands of posters from the recent by-election simply because they had ‘by election’ printed on them. The main parties are using State funding to produce posters and it’s high time to overhaul this wasteful practice’ he said.
Cllr Noonan said that by keeping our town and village centres as poster free zones we could at least reduce the impact. ‘It is my hope that other candidates will support my proposal and perhaps for future elections we may see a greater reduction in their use’ he concluded.
