Official opening of Troyswood Water Treatment Plant

It was an honour to officially open the upgraded Troyswood Water Treatment Plant today, and to mark the completion of works on the Kilkenny Regional Water Supply Scheme.

The €33 million scheme involved the upgrade of Troyswood Water Treatment Plant and the installation of a new network, allowing for the decommissioning of the Radestown Water Treatment Plant. One of the earliest campaigns I got involved with in politics was on the issue of water quality in Kilkenny and today it all came full circle, as the upgrades to the network under the Kilkenny Regional Water Supply Scheme have resulted in the removal the Kilkenny’s water supply from the EPA’s Remedial Action List.

The upgrade will serve the city's needs long into the future, ensuring a safe and reliable water supply for homes and businesses in the region. It will also see additional nature based solutions elements tested on site. It's a great day for Kilkenny, and it allows us to appreciate first-hand the importance of projects like the Kilkenny Regional Water Supply Scheme and the positive impact investment in our water infrastructure has on local residents and businesses.

The completion of this new water supply scheme is pivotal for the future growth and development of Kilkenny city and the surrounding areas. It will support social and economic growth and provide capacity for future growth.

This government has long recognised the need to invest in our water and wastewater infrastructure and we’ve seen record levels record of investment in water services by Uisce Eireann in the 2021 -2025 period. In Budget 2024 alone, almost €1 billion of of capital funding was made available to Uisce Eireann. This investment is focused on improving water services where they are needed most, and as someone who had long campaigned for improvements to water quality for Kilkenny I’m really pleased to see the results of such investment here today.

We have successfully delivered on our promise as a Government to invest in and upgrade Kilkenny’s water infrastructure, aligning it with international standards.
