Today is World Bicycle Day – a day when, as the United Nations puts it, we acknowledge “the uniqueness, longevity, and versatility of the bicycle, which has been in use for two centuries and is a simple, affordable, reliable, clean, and environmentally fit sustainable means of transportation.”
And thanks to the Green Party's investment in safe cycling, the message is clear: #CyclingIsForEveryone.
We're driving unprecedented investment in safe cycling infrastructure. Our announcement earlier this year of a substantial €289m investment in active travel was a clear message that we are committed to creating safer cycling routes for those of all ages, to improving urban air quality, and to becoming carbon neutral by 2050.
I was delighted to work with Carlow County Council, Kilkenny County Council, and Minister Eamon Ryan to help secure €2.5m for Carlow and €3m for Kilkenny in active travel funding and I look forward to seeing plans for ambitious cycling infrastructure here come to fruition over the coming months.
